AfrobeatsAfrobeats: Taking The World By StormThe numbers behind the entertainment industry are staggering and they reveal that entertainment is the next big thing perhaps since oil and Africa is strategically positioned to take full advantage of this new wave with its unique sound popularly known as Afrobeats.

Afrobeats music has had a lot of contributions to Africa and Africans in the diaspora. Live performances and album sales have been recorded to generate a total of 96 million pounds in 2008. This genre of music was birthed by the legendary musician and activist Fela Kuti in the mid-1970s. He is popularly known as the Father of Afrobeat.

When Fela died in 1997, a lot of artist around the world adopted this style of music and created their own sounds based on his template. As a result of the popularity of Afrobeats, various events have sprung up in the diaspora adopting this sound uniting the African community. Recently, Afrobeats karaoke has never been more popular. The afrobeat sound is so much fun and vibrant that even if you’re not African, you’d still move your body to it.

Since its inception and rising popularity, we have seen the quality of the sound and its live performances shoot really high. Although the afrobeat sounds maintain their African origin, the audience that listens to it cuts across race, gender and age. As a result, we now have different variations of afrobeat out there and they are increasingly becoming better and better.

British afrobeat now popular in the UK. They are still rooted in the original afrobeat but with a fine blend of beats and rhythms that they have grown up with such as the grind beat and the slower tempo styles. As a result of this, a lot of British people are drawn to this variant of the afrobeat because that’s what they know and have always known and it’s easier to link all of it together in their mind. However, there is nothing like the original afrobeats coming out of Africa in terms of its identity by itself.

The success has been massive in places like the UK with the popular artist, both British and African selling out venues and arenas with a capacity of thousands. We now have a lot of collaborations taking place between different artists who have adopted this sound from all over the world and the results are incredible.

Stars such as Wizkid, Davido and Tiwa Savage from Nigeria and others like Fuse ODG can come together and have a concert like performance with a lot of success. A lot more mainstream collaborations have also happened. One of such popular collaboration was that between Drake and Wizkid and it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing a lot more.
